No Remote Desktop client access licenses
11:25 22-Aug-12

Occasionally, when attempting to open a remote desktop connection to a Windows computer, you will receive a message stating:

'The remote session was disconnected because there are no Remote Desktop client access licenses available for this computer.
Please contact the server administrator.'

It seems that the easiest way around this problem is to delete a registry key from the system registry.

To do so:
  • Go to 'Start' -> 'Run...' and type 'regedit'. This will start up the Windows Registry Editor.
  • In the left navigation window, navigate through the folders to: 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft' (without the quotation marks).
  • Find the folder marked as 'MSLicensing', right click and delete this folder (including all subfolders and files).
Now try connecting again. If you run into any errors, make sure that you are running the 'Remote Desktop Connection' program as the Administrator.

NOTE — The above procedure involves editing the registry! If you are careful and follow the instructions above exactly, you should have no problems; however, any small mistakes can SERIOUSLY AND IRRECOVERABLY mess up your computer. ALWAYS BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL when doing anything with the registry.
